About this calculator
Public Provident Fund is a 15-year small-savings account. You can deposit up to ₹1,50,000 in a financial year. The government sets the interest rate every quarter. For October to December 2026 that rate is 7.1% a year. Edit the rate box when a new quarter is notified.
This calculator assumes the whole yearly deposit is in place at the start of the year and earns that year’s rate. The real account looks at the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month. A deposit after the 5th does not earn interest for that month. The table is still a clear way to see deposits and interest separately.
The account is meant to be held to maturity. Extension is in blocks of five years. Do not use this page to plan a loan against PPF or a partial withdrawal. Those have their own limits.
A contribution may be eligible under the old tax regime’s investment deduction. The default new regime does not allow that deduction. Interest and maturity treatment should be checked in the return you actually file.
How this PPF estimate is built
Each year the model adds the deposit, then adds interest = balance × rate. This matches a deposit made at the start of the year that earns a full year of interest. The official method is stricter: interest is calculated each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day, and it is credited at year end. Deposits above ₹1,50,000 in a year are capped in this tool.
Example: ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years
₹1,50,000 at the start of each year for 15 years at 7.1%.
Total deposited is ₹22,50,000.00. Illustrated maturity is ₹40,68,209.22. Interest is ₹18,18,209.22.
If you deposit later in the month, the post office balance that earns interest can be lower than this model. Treat the maturity as an upper-style planning figure for a start-of-year deposit, and confirm the live rate.
₹1.5 lakh yearly for 15 years at 7.1%
Start-of-year deposit model.
₹40,68,209.22
How to use
- Enter the amount you expect to deposit each financial year.
- Check the interest rate against the latest small-savings notification and edit it if the quarter has changed.
- Leave the term at 15 years unless you are extending the account.
- Press Calculate and read the deposited amount separately from the interest.
Important notes
- The rate notified for October to December 2026 is 7.1% a year. The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter.
- The maximum deposit is ₹1,50,000 in a financial year. The minimum is ₹500.
- A new account matures in 15 years and can be extended in 5-year blocks.
- Withdrawal rules are limited. This page does not model a partial withdrawal.
- Tax treatment of the contribution depends on the regime you use. The new regime does not give the old 80C deduction.
FAQ
What interest rate does this use?
The box defaults to 7.1%, the rate notified for October–December 2026. Change it when the government notifies a new quarter.
Why might my passbook be lower?
Interest uses the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. A deposit after the 5th waits until the next month. This model assumes a full year on the yearly deposit.
Can I deposit more than ₹1.5 lakh?
The tool caps the yearly deposit at ₹1,50,000 and tells you when it has done so. Amounts above the limit are not part of the PPF rules used here.
Is PPF tax-free in the new regime?
The new regime does not allow the old deduction for the contribution. Check the current treatment of interest and withdrawal in the income-tax material for your year. This calculator does not file a return.
