About this calculator

Income tax for individuals is charged in slabs, then cess, and sometimes a surcharge. For tax year 2026-27 the default is the new regime. Its slabs start at nil up to ₹4 lakh and rise to 30% above ₹24 lakh. A resident whose taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh gets a rebate that can bring the tax to zero. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief stops the tax from jumping by more than the extra income.

Salaried people and pensioners also get a standard deduction: ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old one. That is why a gross salary of ₹12,75,000 can still be a nil-tax illustration under the new regime. Business income does not get that standard deduction.

The old regime has a higher basic exemption for senior and super-senior taxpayers, a 5% / 20% / 30% shape, and room for deductions such as 80C. Those deductions do nothing in the new-regime column. The page shows both so you can see the difference instead of guessing it.

This is not the income-tax return utility. It skips special rates for some capital gains, clubbing, losses, and most schedules. Use it to understand the size of the tax, then verify anything you will pay or file.

How the tax is estimated

New regime slabs for tax year 2026-27:
Up to ₹4,00,000: nil
₹4,00,001 to ₹8,00,000: 5%
₹8,00,001 to ₹12,00,000: 10%
₹12,00,001 to ₹16,00,000: 15%
₹16,00,001 to ₹20,00,000: 20%
₹20,00,001 to ₹24,00,000: 25%
Above ₹24,00,000: 30%

Salary and pension get a standard deduction of ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old regime.
A resident with taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 gets a rebate of up to ₹60,000 in the new regime, with marginal relief just above that line.
The old regime rebate is up to ₹12,500 when taxable income is up to ₹5,00,000.
Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh. Health and education cess is 4%.

Example: ₹15 lakh salary

Gross salary of ₹15,00,000, resident, under 60, with ₹1,50,000 typed in the 80C box.

New-regime total tax is ₹97,500.00. Old-regime total tax is ₹2,10,600.00.

The 80C amount reduces only the old regime. The new regime uses the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the slab table, not 80C. A salary of ₹12,75,000 is in the nil-tax area of the new regime after the standard deduction, because taxable income is ₹12,00,000 and the rebate clears the slab tax.

₹15 lakh salary, resident, under 60

80C of ₹1.5 lakh affects only the old regime.

₹97,500.00 new regime

How to use

  1. Enter gross annual income.
  2. Say whether it is salary or pension, or other income. Standard deduction applies only to salary and pension.
  3. Choose age. It changes the old-regime basic exemption.
  4. Leave the resident box on unless you are a non-resident. Non-residents do not get the rebate in this tool.
  5. Enter old-regime deductions only if you want that comparison. They are ignored in the new regime.
  6. Press Calculate and read both totals. The lower figure is only an estimate.

Important notes

  • Budget 2026 did not change these slab rates, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, or the ₹12 lakh rebate.
  • The new regime is the default. Old-regime deductions such as 80C are not applied to the new-regime total.
  • 80C is capped here at ₹1,50,000 and 80D at ₹1,00,000. Enter only amounts you are actually eligible to claim.
  • Capital gains, HRA inside the return, house-property loss, and employer NPS are not calculated.
  • Surcharge includes a simple marginal-relief check at the ₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore, and ₹2 crore lines. A complicated return still needs the official utility.

FAQ

Which year is this for?

Tax year 2026-27, which is 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Budget 2026 left the personal slab rates unchanged from the previous year.

Why is tax zero at ₹12.75 lakh salary?

The new-regime standard deduction of ₹75,000 brings ₹12,75,000 of salary down to ₹12,00,000. The resident rebate then clears the tax on that taxable income. Other income and a non-resident status can change this.

Does 80C reduce the new regime?

No. The 80C, 80D, and other deduction boxes are used only in the old-regime column.

Is surcharge included?

Yes, above ₹50 lakh of taxable income, with a marginal-relief check so the extra tax does not exceed the extra income over the threshold. Cess is 4% of tax plus surcharge.
