About this calculator
A fixed deposit pays a stated rate for a stated term. The maturity amount depends on how often the bank compounds. Quarterly compounding, which most Indian bank FDs use, adds interest four times a year and then pays interest on that interest.
Enter the rate you were actually offered. A 0.5 percentage point difference changes the maturity more than people expect on a long deposit. If you are a senior citizen and the bank has given you a higher card rate, type that higher rate. Do not assume this page knows your bank.
Interest on an FD can attract TDS. The maturity number on this page is the contractual amount before that deduction. Your bank may also follow a different day-count if the term is broken in the middle of a quarter.
Compare an FD with PPF only after you read the lock-in and tax treatment of each. They are different products. The PPF calculator is linked below for that comparison.
FD formula
Compound maturity = P × (1 + r / n)^(n × t) P is the deposit. r is the yearly rate in decimal form. n is the number of compounds in a year (4 for quarterly). t is the time in years. Simple interest = P × r × t, added to P.
Example: ₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years
₹1,00,000 at 7% a year for 5 years, compounded quarterly.
Maturity is ₹1,41,477.82. Interest is ₹41,477.82.
The same deposit with simple interest would earn less, because simple interest does not earn interest on earlier interest. TDS is not subtracted here.
₹1 lakh at 7% quarterly for 5 years
Before TDS.
₹1,41,477.82
How to use
- Enter the amount you will place in the deposit.
- Enter the yearly rate from the bank, including any senior-citizen extra if it applies to you.
- Enter years and months.
- Leave compounding on quarterly unless the deposit receipt says otherwise.
- Press Calculate. The maturity figure is before tax.
Important notes
- Quarterly compounding is the usual bank FD convention in India.
- TDS may be deducted if interest crosses the threshold for the year.
- A premature withdrawal usually earns a lower rate and may have a penalty.
- Senior-citizen rates are higher at many banks. Type that rate yourself. This page does not store bank cards.
FAQ
Why is quarterly the default?
Most Indian bank fixed deposits compound interest every quarter. Change it if your deposit receipt says monthly, half-yearly, yearly, or simple interest.
Is TDS deducted in the result?
No. The maturity amount is before tax. Your bank may deduct TDS when interest crosses the notified threshold.
What if I break the FD early?
The bank usually applies a lower rate for the period you actually stayed, and it may charge a penalty. This calculator does not model that.
Should I add the senior-citizen extra myself?
Yes. Enter the rate the bank offered you, including any extra. The calculator does not guess your age or your bank.
