About this calculator

Most unit conversions are a factor. One foot is 0.3048 metres, so the rest of the length list hangs off the metre. Area hangs off the square metre, weight off the kilogram, and volume off the litre. Temperature is the exception because zero does not mean the same thing on each scale.

Indian land units are the reason this page is careful. A gaj in everyday North Indian use is taken here as 9 square feet. A cent is taken as 435.6 square feet. A ground is taken as the Tamil Nadu figure of 2,400 square feet. Marla is shown twice, at 272.25 and at 225 square feet, because using one of them silently would give a confident wrong answer in the other region. Bigha varies even more and is left out rather than given a fake national value.

The result includes the factor so you can see the definition. If your sale deed defines the unit differently, use the deed.

How a conversion works

For length, area, weight, and volume the value is multiplied by the source unit’s size and divided by the target unit’s size. Both sizes are in one base unit: metres, square metres, kilograms, or litres.

Temperature uses an offset:
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
K = °C + 273.15

Gaj = 9 square feet.
Cent = 435.6 square feet.
Ground = 2,400 square feet (Tamil Nadu figure used here).
Marla is listed twice: 272.25 square feet and 225 square feet.

Example

1 gaj = 9 square feet in this converter.

1 cent = 435.6 square feet. If a local record uses another cent, do not force it through this factor.

1 gaj to square feet

Gaj is defined here as 9 sq ft.

9 square feet

How to use

  1. Enter the value.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you want. They must be the same type.
  3. Press Calculate and read the factor line so you can see which definition was used.

Important notes

  • Marla and bigha are not the same in every state. This page refuses a single silent marla.
  • Ground is the 2,400 sq ft Tamil Nadu figure, not a national standard.
  • Gaj is taken as 9 sq ft, which is also one square yard.
  • Do not mix area units with length units. The form will stop you.

FAQ

How big is a gaj here?

9 square feet, the same as one square yard.

Why are there two marlas?

Because 272.25 sq ft and 225 sq ft are both in use. The label tells you which one you picked.

What is a ground?

The Tamil Nadu figure of 2,400 square feet used on this page. It is not a national unit.

Can I convert square feet to kilograms?

No. The two units have to be the same kind of measure.
