About this calculator

A discount reduces the price by a percent of the price it applies to. A second “extra” discount in a shop almost always applies to the reduced price, not to the original. Adding the percents together overstates the saving.

This page does the successive cut, then shows what you saved against the original price. If GST still has to be added, it is added after the discount, which is the usual order when the tag was exclusive of tax. If the tag already includes tax, leave GST at zero.

The GST box does not know your product. A wrong rate gives a wrong total even when the discount maths is right. Check the GST calculator when you only need the tax split.

Discount formula

Price after first discount = price × (1 − first% / 100)
Price after extra discount = that result × (1 − extra% / 100)
GST = discounted price × GST% / 100
You pay = discounted price + GST

Example

A price of ₹1,000 with 10% off becomes ₹900. The amount saved is ₹100.

A further 10% on ₹900 takes off ₹90, not another ₹100. The price is then ₹810. Adding the two discounts into a flat 20% would wrongly give ₹800.

₹1,000 with 10% off

Single discount, no GST.

₹900

How to use

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the first discount. Use zero if there is none.
  3. Enter an extra discount only when it applies to the already reduced price.
  4. Enter GST only when tax still has to be added. Leave it at zero if the shelf price includes tax.
  5. Press Calculate.

Important notes

  • Two discounts of 10% are not 20% off. The second applies to what is left.
  • If the price already includes GST, do not add GST again.
  • The GST rate still depends on the item. This page does not classify it.

FAQ

Are 10% + 10% equal to 20%?

No. The second 10% is taken from the price after the first discount. On ₹1,000 that is ₹810, not ₹800.

When do I fill GST?

Only when the discounted price is still before tax. If the price on the shelf includes GST, leave the box at zero.

Can the discount be zero?

Yes. You can use the page to add GST alone, though the GST calculator is clearer for a tax split.

Does it handle a coupon in rupees?

No. Enter the percent. Convert a rupee coupon into a percent of the price first if you need to.
